Figure 13-7 (above) illustrates the techniques used for rapid DNA sequencing. Four different colors of fluorescent dyes are used to mark the ends of polynucleotide strands, which are then separated on a gel of column. Automated machines then scan the gel for color, recording each colored bands as one of the four bases. There was a small error in this figure in the first two printings of the book's first edition.
